What Is Tardigrade (Storj) And The Cloud Storage Technology?
Tardigrade is an S3-compatible decentralized cloud storage service introduced by the Storj platform.
Tardigrade is an S3-compatible decentralized cloud storage service introduced by the Storj (STORJ) platform in March 2020. Cloud storage is a technique that allows digital data – texts, images, music, video files, and more – to be stored “in the cloud,” that is, on a remote server managed by a dedicated service provider. Utilizing cloud storage instead of local storage has a number of advantages, including enhanced server efficiency (leading to cheaper storage costs per byte) and the flexibility to access stored data from anywhere in the globe.
Numerous businesses utilize cloud storage services to store, access, and provide digital material to their clients – and the S3 application programming interface (API), initially introduced by Amazon Web Services in 2006, is the industry standard for interacting with files in the cloud. Most prominent cloud storage providers support this standard, allowing for a high level of interoperability throughout the industry and making data transfer across clouds simple.
Tardigrade’s Robust Features
Tardigrade, named after a robust tiny creature, is a comparable S3-compliant storage service but a decentralized one.Instead of massive server clusters located in specialized data centers, Tardigrade depends on a distributed network of small-scale storage nodes for its functioning.
Tardigrade divides data into up to 80 pieces, which are encrypted and delivered to different storage nodes on the network. Just 29 of these pieces must later be recovered from the nodes in order to reconstruct the file; this redundancy is used to make the system robust against probable outagesor even atotal shutdownof individual storage nodes.
The fact that files are divided into several portions and distributed across many storage nodes protects both individual nodes and the protocol as a whole from illegal data mining. Tardigrade, according to Storj, was the first decentralized S3-compatible cloud storage service to become live.
